Aquaman New Release Date
The news lately in the comic book world seems to be entirely focused on Marvel and a little film being released on April 27th called Avengers Infinity War. Understandably so, it’s being hyped up as the biggest movie of the 2018 summer box office. But it’s not all about Marvel, people. Other properties like the DCEU is making some serious changes in their line up to give comic fans what they’ve been craving. A new female Batgirl screenwriter has been hired, The Batman could get that juicy 2020 release in June, the Flashpoint movie has Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley attached, Shazam is filming, and Wonder Woman 2 is making some bold casting decisions (I’m quiet happy for Kristin Wiig) and slated for November 2019. Despite what people think of the DCEU, what they’re doing now is A LOT better than what they had in 2016 and at the end of 2018, we finally get a standalone Aquaman film! Next to Avengers, this is my other most anticipated movie of the year that surpasses Venom and Ant Man and the Wasp. What a perfect holiday present!
At this moment, Aquaman has a December 21st 2018 release date and its only competition is the Transformers Bumblebee spinoff. Usually, DC’s movies slated in the US have the same release date as the other countries across the pond. However, Aquaman is going to be screened a week early in the UK on December 14th. I don’t think this necessarily means Aquaman will get bumped up a week early too in the US. I think it would be best to keep that solid December date, unless they want to be separated from the Bumblebee film or Bumblebee will move somewhere else instead. It’s nice to think that we don’t have to rely at the last minute to see the embargo lift in regards to reviews. Maybe the studio has a lot of confidence in the movie, which they should. James Wan is an extremely talented director who’s Conjuring Universe is incredible and also made one of the better Fast and Furious films. People are excited to see Jason Mamoa kill it in Aquaman. Aquaman is the only film so far to not receive any negative press. Rupert Gregson-Williams is writing the score and his Wonder Woman score is so iconic, Don Burgess lensed the film (Spider Man and Forest Gump), and its got an A-List cast of Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, and Dolph Lundgen. What’s seriously not to like about that?
Yes we have yet to get that first teaser trailer. Isn’t that awesome? James Wan doesn’t want to ruin this delicate process, which is the smartest choice a director can make and the studio is being patient with him. He wants the CGI to be flawless and Aquaman is going to have a lot of it. Also, wouldn’t it be better to have the trailer next month after Avengers Infinity War hits theatres? Let the Marvel craze settle down and go full market push for the summer or wait till San Diego Comic Con to do it. There’s no need to rush. December is a long time away. But I must say this early release date in the UK sounds like a positive sign. We might even get a Shazam trailer this summer too! Rumors going around that this film is going to have battle scenes underwater reminiscent of the space battles in Star Wars. Star Wars underwater sound pretty epic.
Could Aquaman get an earlier release date? It’s possible. But I’d be fine if it stays where it’s at. What do you think? Will we finally get a bold vision of Aquaman that we’ve never seen before? All the signs point up so we definitely should.
