Aquaman Trailer 2 Reaction
So a few days ago at New York Comic Con not only did we get a new Aquaman trailer, we got an extended trailer than contains five minutes of footage instead of the usual two-and-a-half minutes we normally see in most trailers. Lets call it a super trailer! You don’t come across too many of these nowadays. Some people out there might fear that the studio is showing too much movie and spoiling major plot details, but it follows a similar beat as the last one and I got to say this new footage blew my mind. While I was a fan of the first trailer, this one was even better. Lets dig in!
We get more of a storybook intro this time showing the birth of Arthur from Queen Atlanna and Thomas Curry and how this relationship is not looked upon too fondly. Forbidden stuff. More importantly it shows the bonding of two cultures from opposite worlds and how vital it can be in order to ensure the survival of earths inhabitants both human and Atlantean. We then fast forward to grown Arthur Curry talking with his dad and more shots of the submarine incursion we saw previously. Then it cuts to an elongated desert sequence where we learn more about Atlantis’s past and where the adventure ultimately begins. Right here, I was reminded of Raiders of the Lost Ark (My 2nd favorite movie of all time) which James Wan took inspiration from when filming this scene. Really cool stuff. Next we get some new footage to showcase the visuals and CGI. Is it me, or do these visuals look even more eye-popping than before? There’s so much color to soak in and I can’t tell you how important colors are in movie making. There’s no saturation or monotone lighting its all bold and bright and that’s the direction this movie needed to go into. After we get the exposition scene in the hidden temple, we get some humor thrown in. While it was good to see, I hope there will be a few more bits that don’t get spoiled. This had just the right balance. Not too much joking, not too little.
In comes BLACK MANTA! One word: badass! I can’t tell you how cool looking that costume is. The black suit, the blades, the eye pieces on the helmet are big and expressive and they shoot laser beams. A+ material. Really interested to see how he fits into the story. The last sequence in the trailer displayed the visuals, now we get a look at the cinematography. Its great stuff. A lot of use of wide takes and pans, some takes appear to be done in one shot. Very refreshing to not see multiple angle quick cuts that gets annoying quickly. This was something James Wan did with Furious 7 which was a bit of a disappointment but here, the action sequences are more locked down with the camera and that’s a major plus.
We do get more of the same shots we saw in the last trailer but with a few new images of different chambers, the deep sea monsters, and the undersea life. Atlantis looks great as it did before. Definitely has a Black Panther vibe since both these films focus on the passing of the torch for future kings. Patrick Wilson looks menacing I can’t wait to see more of his acting chops. What we got from him was enough but I would’ve liked to have seen more. Could be saving it for later. I think we saw Dolph Lundgren for a brief second or maybe that was Graham McTavish with the red beard? Not sure but it was one of the seven kings. We’re definitely promised a boat-load of action no pun intended. Even Nicole Kidman is in on the fight as she takes out some enemies in her house. More scenes showing the character conflicts between Mera and Arthur with the sun in the background as previously seen. I’m really hoping that stays strong throughout because we want to see our hero Aquaman have a vulnerability that we can relate and latch onto. He did a lot of drinking in Justice League and I don’t mean sea water. Having that alcohol addiction is a flaw for our hero that makes him more human and interesting.
The last couple seconds showed us what we saw already in terms of the epic Star Wars Underwater battle sequences and that’s perfectly fine with me. Show us what we know already and unleash the full experience in theatres. We last get what could be the tag line for the film. “What could be greater than a king?” A hero. Then we get the classic costume reveal. I was worried at first because when looking at classic Aquaman I’m drawn to the silliness of how the outfit appears it was something I never took seriously. I took this new reveal seriously. The colors of classic Aquaman stay true, the scales on the armor are so detailed, and it suits the tone for the film. I did like his costume and the hardened warrior look in Justice League. Zack Snyder did a great job with it however here, we still get that hardened warrior image and it stays faithful to the comic illustrations which will please the die hard fans of the past and new fans to come.
There you have it! There’s a lot this trailer did right and ended up being an upgrade over the last one. Honestly if there’s no more trailers after this one, awesome. I don’t think we need another one before December but we’ll probably still get a third trailer of sorts. No sign of Willem Defoe but that’s okay we don’t need to cram everything into a trailer. It’s best to hold off certain story elements until we get to our seats opening night. A lot is riding on this movie since this is the only DC feature for 2018 as more new releases are on the horizon for 2019 with Shazam, Joker, and Wonder Woman 1984. You can tell the Snyder Era has passed with these new films coming up and a new direction has begun. James Wan is such a young talented film maker and I’m keeping those fingers crossed he made a hit. Just on what we’ve seen these past few months, we’re in for a visual treat and plenty of action. As long as the story has weight with good pacing and the characters are fleshed out then were going to have a winner.
I’m going to give Aquaman the extended trailer an A
