DC Details at CinemaCon
Its only Tuesday and this week is already filled with nothing but exciting comic book extravaganza’s! Avengers Infinity War hits theatre’s April 27th, A full-length trailer of Venom has dropped, Deadpool 2 is less than a month away, and James Cameron is at it again, criticizing comic book movies for being the same and not knowing when to keep his mouth shut ( I could go in full detail but that’s another story). Another great event today was CinemaCon in Las Vegas, NV and Warner Bros. unveiled a lot of upcoming plot details for upcoming DC projects as well as rough footage for upcoming trailers.
The big focus was this years Aquaman. James Wan and Jason Mamoa were present and the cast and crew unveiled that they vow to make this movie in the vein of epic adventures like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, except underwater. While the effects are still being perfected and a trailer still in the works, what people saw in the footage was extremely impressive. The plot for Aquaman is going to focus on Arthur Curry returning to Atlantis and going to war with his corrupt half-brother Orm the Ocean Master (Played by Patrick Wilson, who is seen wearing a blonde wig). Black Manta is also in the film but its not clear how exactly he fits into the main plot yet. There’s also another conflict involving the sea dwellers and the surface world. According to Mamoa during the footage he said:
“He solves problems with his fists. I’m a blunt instrument and I’m damn good at it.”
Another great piece of information is that Amber Heard, who plays Queen Mera, is quoted by saying her character is very much “a warrior in her own right. She is not a damsel in distress.” Hearing that is awesome and relieving. The damsel in distress character trait is a thing in the past. It’s so stupid. We got strong female characters in both the DCEU and MCU and we’re on the right path to introducing more along the way.
In the world of Wonder Woman 2, Patty Jenkins in a video has confirmed that it will in fact happen in the 1980’s so it’ll take place during The Cold War. We’re still unsure if that’ll be a major focus and also exactly where Wonder Woman will be throughout the adventure. We should see Themyscira again (they’re filming there) and perhaps the United States or Russia.
For David F. Sandberg’s Shazam!, he’s calling it a family friendly experience for kids and adults that’s basically a comic book version of Tom Hank’s “Big”. Adam Brody has been added to the cast as well as Ross Butler and few other names that will create “The Shazam Family.” It’s been speculated that Adam Brody will play the adult version of Freddy Freeman. It’s nice to see him get another shot in the DC world, kind of like Ryan Reynolds with the character Deadpool for Marvel. Unfortunately, back in 2007 he was slated to play Barry Allen / The Flash in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal and that sadly never happened due to what looked like budget risks and bad timing. The original script is available online and it’s honestly not half bad. David F. Sandberg has teased potential plot details and maybe we’ll see a trailer at San Diego ComicCon in July.
