Film News for DC
So in the last article, I talked about the possibility of Aquaman getting moved up a week in the US since its been moved in the UK but honestly it’ll stay where it is. For this piece, I wanted to share a little bit about all the DCEU news in regards to the major films we have slated for the next two years. There’s a lot to be excited about in the upcoming months, San Diego Comic Con is right around the corner and I plan on making an appearance at Wizard World in Philadelphia. Three of the six Justice League members will be there Jason Mamoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fischer as well as Sebastian Stan aka The Winter Soldier. Maybe I’ll get a chance to meet a few? It does cost money so there’s that issue. Anyway, on to DCEU News!
Brett Ratner is officially gone!
It’s now made official that Warner Bros. Studios have officially removed Brett Ratner and Ratpack Entertainment from being producers of all upcoming DC properties. His lot on the studio is now gone. Brett Ratner got into hot water after multiple accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior. He hasn’t directed a film since Hercules in 2014 but he’s been a producer on multiple projects. One of them being Wonder Woman and both Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot did not want to sign on to the sequel if he was still attached. Well Wonder Woman 2 is moving full speed ahead without him involved. It’s a great sign moving forward for WB and that this sort of thing will not be associated with their films.
No word on the trailer yet but its still kind of early for that. However yesterday the Aquaman crew, under the name Ahab, have officially begun reshoots on the film which was inevitable. It’s the new blockbuster norm nowadays. Amber Heard posed on Twitter a pic of herself in the Queen Mera outfit and they added a new character to the storyline being played by Randall Park, who also has a role in this summers Ant Man and the Wasp. That’s pretty awesome to be in a Marvel and DC film in the same year. He’ll take on the role of Dr. Stephen Shin. In the comics, Shin is good friends with Arthur Curry and helps him develop and harness his powers. Also in the reshoots there is the possibility of a Superman reference which would make sense because it’ll focus on events after Justice League took place.
In the world of Shazam, filming is going on as scheduled up in the Toronto area. Zachary Levi has been posting on Twitter quite a bit, fighting back at the negative comments towards his costume and body shaming but the man’s been taking this role seriously and his working out regularly. It also seems he and Henry Cavill are hinting at strong possibilities that Superman will make a cameo appearance in Shazam. At first on Twitter it look like a bit of a stretch but now it’s looking like the real deal. We’ve gotten some shots of Zachary Levi in costume and in action, but never an official image. It has yet to be released. It’s all been cell phone pics from a distance. We also haven’t seen Mark Strong as the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Could be kept on the hush hush till the trailer drops.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson spoke out on the red carpet during the premier of Rampage that the Black Adam standalone movie could start filming as early as next year. According to IMDB, he’s listed in Suicide Squad 2 for his character Black Adam to make an appearance. I personally think that would be a better introduction for his character if he were the villain in that film. What do you think? Suicide Sqaud 2 is also suppose to start filming as early as Fall 2018.
Speaking of Rampage, Joe Manganiello is also alongside the Rock in that film and he was asked about the progress of the standalone Deathstroke movie at the premier. As of now, Gareth Evans is attached to direct who was known for amazing action films like The Raid and Raid 2. Originally Deathstroke was the slated villain for The Batman but the plans may have changed under Matt Reeve’s new script. He could still appear or maybe we will wait till the standalone. If we can be guaranteed anything with Deathstroke’s movie, it’ll have amazing action sequences with a massive body count. He’s called the Terminator for a reason.
In terms of the new actor to play Batman, the frontrunner is still Jake Gyllenhaal. Jon Hamm’s name has been included as another possibility if the studio decides to continue that older, more grizzled look for Batman that Ben Affleck captured in the previous films. Jake Gyllenhaal recently made a video explaining that nothing has moved forward and that he’s probably isn’t Batman. A similar situation happened when Joaquin Phoenix denied rumors about playing the Joker in Todd Phillips’s upcoming film. It could be a ploy to stay quiet. Jake almost played Batman before back in 2005 but Christian Bale sealed the deal. I’m still thinking the new Batman is Jake Gyllenhaal.
Wonder Woman 2
Casting is almost complete for Wonder Woman 2 and they’re set to start filming towards the end of the year for a November 2019 release. Kristin Wiig and Pedro Pascal are the most recent casting announcements. Kristin Wiig is the villain Cheetah with Pedro Pascal as a potential secondary villain to the plot or he could be a protagonist of sorts. He has the range to do both. The plot has been rumored to take place during the Cold War in the 1980’s in either Russia or America not completely sure. The script is still being worked on.
If there’s anything I missed, comment below. All the pieces are moving forward to expand this exciting universe.
