First Transgender Superhero
Nicole Maines is going to be the first transgender actor to portray a live-action superhero. Maines will be playing the role of Nia Nal, who becomes known as Dreamer. The hero will be featured in the CW series “Supergirl.”
The character has been described as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.” Maines said “It seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to.”
“I want fans to take away an understanding of trans people. We can be anybody, we can be who we want, we can be superheroes – because in many ways we are.”
Maines went on to say she doesn’t want fans to think of her as just a trans superhero because she is so much than just that. She is also powerful, wise and a good friend.
We have seen Superheroes play an important part in society in past roles. Most notably the power Gal Gadot had in giving young girls a role model to look up to.
We also saw Black Panther bring out a lot of African pride.
I think it’s great to see comics breaking social barriers and giving all different kinds of people someone they can identify with and look up to.
