Infinity War becomes fourth film to cross $2 billion worldwide
Marvel’s Avengers – Infinity War crossed a pretty big milestone, Monday.
Disney announced Tuesday that the third Avengers film crossed the $2 billion mark in its 48th day in theaters.
Infinity War has now grossed $2.001 billion in worldwide (domestic-plus-international) grosses, and it’s solidly in fourth place all-time ahead of No. 5 Jurassic World, which sits at $1.671 billion.
Director James Cameron is responsible for the top two films, all-time. His sci-fi epic Avatar sits at No. 1 worldwide with $2.788 billion. Titanic is No. 2 at $2.1875 billion.
Star Wars – The Force Awakens sits in third place at $2.0682 billion, and while it is unlikely Infinity War can pass it, there is still a shot.
Infinity War is easily the top worldwide film of 2018. Another Marvel Cinematic Universe film – Black Panther – is No. 2 on the year at $1.3459 billion. Deadpool 2 is way back in third at $655.7 million.
Domestically, Infinity War and Black Panther are switched. Black Panther is No. 1 at $699 million and Infinity War clocks in at $655 million. Infinity War is still in theaters, but it is extremely unlikely it can make another $44 million during the summer blockbuster season.
Interestingly, Star Wars – The Force Awakens easily owns the domestic all-time record with $936.7 million. Avatar is No. 2 at $760.5 million and Titanic is No. 4 (behind Black Panther’s $699 million) with $659 million. Infinity War will pass Titanic soon and jump to fourth, but what’s interesting is that Star Wars films are so much bigger domestically than internationally, and the Cameron films were much bigger internationally than domestically (though both were, of course, huge hits in the United States and owned the top 2 domestic records until Force Awakens, Black Panther and Infinity War came along).
Also interesting is that Avatar, Force Awakens and Titanic were all released in December, meaning Infinity War is the first film in history to cross $2 billion worldwide outside of the holiday season.
