Is The New Mutants Doomed To Fail?
By JohnBoy March 29th, 2017
Does anyone remember that awful Fantastic Four movie that came out in 2015? I sure do. I didn’t see it in theatre’s but before it finally landed on the big screen in August 2015, there were so many tell-tale signs that led to this movie’s downfall. From the release dat getting pushed back to supposed studio interference to Josh Trank maybe getting drunk on set and sending out that infamous Tweet condemning his own movie, Fantastic Four was doomed to fail. Is The New Mutants heading down the same rabbit hole? Unfortunately, it feels like history is on the verge of repeating itself.
I hope this is not the case. 20th Century Fox is a smart company that has made some truly excellent X-Men films. My personal favorite being Logan, which happened to be my favorite comic book movie of 2017. I just can’t help but feel that they’re making some terrible decisions with their properties. When I saw the trailer for The New Mutants, I was pleasantly surprised. I was sold on the cast, I was sold on the overall presentation. It had the vibe of being a comic book horror movie with a sense of dread that’s meant to make you feel uneasy. That’s something I felt was going to be different and unique. I couldn’t wait. In fact, the movie was ready for an April 2018 release date. We could’ve been expecting this film to come out in a few short weeks. Then it got pushed back in order to add a new character, which means re-shoots were set to happen. And just recently, it got pushed back again to next year in August 2019, just like Fantastic Four. The studio demanded more re-shoots to take place in the process. I heard a rumor that supposedly 50% of the film is being re-shot because we now live in a world where re-shoots are becoming the new norm. From Suicide Squad to Rogue One to the recent Star Wars film Solo, they’re inevitable. Sometimes on this grand scale level.
Whatever really happened between Josh Trank and 20th Century Fox, it was a collaboration that didn’t work out. Same thing is going on with New Mutant director Josh Boone, most notably recognized for his work on The Fault in our Starts. I can’t help but feel like his original vision is being tampered with. Now this could be because of the new merger deal set in motion between Disney/MCU and 20th Century Fox in which this is the potential start of the MCU taking over. However I don’t think this deal will take into effect until after 2020. Disney is in no rush to acquire Deadpool, X-Men, and Fantastic Four because their still pumping out their own movies. Believe me I want this story to be great. I love this young talented cast of Anya-Taylor Joy, Maisie Williams, and Charlie Heaton just to name a few. Then again, Fantastic Four had a very young cast too and it didn’t utilize any of their strengths. With Dark Phoenix being pushed back as well, things aren’t looking to positive for the X-Men universe. The one thing that’s not jeopardizing The New Mutants is the budget. It’s by far the lowest of all the films but re-shots cost money and so does getting the cast back together when their already off working on other projects.
Do you think The New Mutants is doomed to fail? I hope I’m wrong about all of this. I do.
