Marvel Family Casting Rumors
There may be some casting announcements coming soon from the DCEU in regards to the new “Shazam!” movie, specifically who will step into the roles of the Adult Shazam Family.
In the New 52 universe rolled out by DC Comics in 2011, Billy Batson shares his lightning powers given to him by the wizard Shazam with his foster family, allowing the whole lot of them to transform into the mighty Shazam Family. These child actors have already been cast, and Screenrant.com has compiled some very persuasive evidence that seems to strongly point out who DC plans to cast as their super powered adult counterparts.
Freddie Freeman, who will be portrayed by Jack Dylan Grazer (IT), will call out the magic sorceress name and will transform into Captain Marvel Jr. who might now be brought to life by actor Adam Brody (Yoga Hosers). If this is true, this will be Brody’s second time suiting up for a DC role, but the first to come to light. Brody was supposed to be the scarlet speedster himself in George Miller’s Justice League Mortal, but that project was cancelled before it even went into production due to a writers strike. Brody might not be the only actor though who gets a second bite at the DC apple as a former almost co-star from the JL: Mortal project might be joining the Shazam Family as well.
D.J Cortona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) was fated to be the “Big Blue Boy Scout” when Miller set out to form the Justice League, but now is likely to step into the role of Herculean, the bearded strongman. Herculean is the mighty form of Pedro Peña, another foster sibling of Billy, who will be played by Jovan Armand (The Middle). It will surely be interesting to watch Cortana and Brody play off one another through this super-hero prism, and almost impossible not to think about the Flash and Superman once the idea has been planted.
Most of these casing rumors are coming from social media trends. Producers, directors and other actors do whatever anyone does once they meet someone they will be working with—follow each other on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The same goes for this cast and crew, and all the recent activity on Michelle Borth’s (Hawaii Five-O) accounts are leading many to believe she will be Mary Marvel. Mary Bromfield, who will be played by Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation), has yet to have whispers circulating about any plot points involving her relationship to Billy other than as foster siblings.
Other social media clues have lead to the pondering of Meagan Good (Think Like a Man) taking on the powerful adult version of Faithe Herman and the character of Darla Dudley, along with Ross Butler (13 Reasons Why) seemingly fitting perfectly as the supersized version of Eugene Choi, who is played by Ian Chen (Fresh Off the Boat).
Though these are some well-based rumors, with tremendous social media Kung Fu to back them up, they are still yet to be confirmed by the studio itself.
“Shazam!” hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
