Things to possibly expect from Aquaman
This week, director James Wan has officially announced that we will finally get to see our first trailer for the anticipated DC standalone film Aquaman. However, we haven’t been told when exactly that’ll happen. It could happen tomorrow, tonight, five minutes from now, five seconds from now. Who knows? There’s already been plenty of on-set photos and images that have surfed the internet, no pun intended. Plus a few Entertainment Weekly cover shots, a poster, and a new color for the Aquaman logo. Time can only tell when the trailer drops. When looking at James Wan as a director, he’s definitely come a long way. Starting out in horror with the first Saw (The best one) and a few other somewhat successful lesser-know horror and action films that eventually led him to back to his roots and deliver to fans the Conjuring Universe and Insidious franchise along with Fast and Furious 7. The man has done it all and he’s still in his early years as a young exceptional talent. With this impressive resume, what can we expect to see out of Aquaman? Lets take a few guesses –
I. Will elements of horror be included?
This is where James Wan has excelled both critically and financially as one of the best faces of the genre this decade. So will there be some scary moments or grotesque creature concepts. The oceans make up 70 % of the Earth so one can expect there to be varieties of monsters in the deep that aren’t just sharks. In fact, James Wan hinted at a trench sequence that would take place and the inspiration behind it was the 1950’s classic monster movie The Creature from the Black Lagoon. These “trench people” were even said to have no eyes and have a creepy character reveal. Sounds like something out of Pan’s Labyrinth. Does that mean there will be a creepy score to accompany them? Will there be something else to fear besides them? If this is true, then we’ll get to see Wan’s roots resurface once again and in terrifying fashion.
II. Use of long and wide takes?
To some people camerawork can sound boring, but nothing is more important that how your film looks to those that pay attention to detail. The use of long and wide takes is now becoming more and more popular especially in recent action films like John Wick and Mad Max Fury Road. While I did enjoy Furious 7, I felt that James Wan incorporated too many multiple angle quick cuts in between action scenes. It got a little distracting but still fun to watch. He’s now improved a lot since then and he has stated he loves his use of wide’s and long takes before the cut. I’m curious to see how he crafts his action scenes for Aquaman when the majority of the film takes place underwater. Battle sequences? 1 v 1 fight scenes? Land fights? Bit of everything? Let’s hope so.
Already mentioned the possible horror aspect, but its not a horror movie. What we got is an action adventure epic on our hands. But what kind exactly? James Wan stated his inspiration for this movie was a cross between Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark (Top 5 movies of all time) and Romancing the Stone. For Raiders, definitely for whit knuckle action and elaborate locations and exciting journeys. But is there a MacGuffin to the plot? Something that both the hero and villain want? Raider’s it was the Ark, Justice League it was the Mother Boxes, what is it for Aquaman? If there is one. As for the Romancing the Stone comparison, only thing that comes to mind is the relationship between Arthur Curry and Queen Mera comparing to Michael Douglass and Kathleen Turner in which these two must work together to fight an imposing threat.
IV. Justice League cameo?
Of all the Justice League cameo’s for a post-credit scene for Aquaman, who’s most likely to show up? My guess would be either Wonder Woman or Batman. It would be funny to see Bruce Wayne make an appearance since they had some good banter in Justice League. Not sure how it would happen though. In some DC comics, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are involved romantically. Would the Amazons make an appearance with the Atlantians? I also thought Superman but I’m thinking he’ll be around for Shazam!
What do you guys think? Thoughts? Comments? All we can do is speculate before that trailer
