What Is Going On With X Men: Dark Phoenix?
Hardcore fans of the Fox X-Men series have patiently been waiting for Simon Kinberg’s ‘Dark Phoenix’ which may be the last Fox X-Men movie. The movie was originally slated to come out on November 2, 2018, then rescheduled to be released on February 14, 2019, before being pushed to June. Back in May, the film apparently had test screenings which were negatively. Leaving people calling the film underwhelming. SPOILER AHEAD. Leaks from the test screening said the movie was similar to X-Men: The Last Stand which is easily the most hated in the franchise up there with Origins. When the news of this was release to the public this led to the film having this hugely negative stigma attached to it. Many people believed that since Disney is acquiring 21st Century meant this movie could be cancelled. Unfortunately for those people that will not happen. Fox has already invested to much money into the movie to just scrap it. So now with the recent release of the trailer fans believed the movie was done with all of the behind the scenes drama. Turns out that’s not true since the movie was delayed again from February 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019. But does this necessarily mean the movie is doomed? Lets break down what all is going on with this movie and what has already happened.
Many movies have been delayed before they even picked up a camera. Example of that being Fox’s Gambit movie which seems to not be able to keep a director attached to it. But what makes Dark Phoenix situation bizarre is the movie has already been shot. Principal photography for Dark Phoenix began on June 28, 2017, in Montreal and ended in October of 2017. The movie is finished yet Fox keep delaying the movie. Why? Well Fox moved the original release date from November 2, 2018 to February 14, 2019 because Fox and Kinberg wanted to schedule some reshoots for the film after receiving feedback from audiences test screenings but were not able to get all of the cast members together until August or September 2018. This would have only left them only two months to finish the CGI for the reshoots which would have not looked as polished as it would had they had more time. So the move to delay the film from November to February was a smart move. But why was it delayed again after they literally just released a trailer that had the February 14, 2019 release date on it?
While speaking to Collider in an Interview, director Simon Kinberg revealed why the release date was moved to June 7:
Some of the trailers had ‘Coming Soon’ on them and some of them said ‘February 14th,’” said Kinberg. “It was a date, February 14th, that we initially liked for the movie but when we realized that we weren’t gonna have the visual effects ready to release it globally the way we wanted to, and the Gambit date opened up because it wasn’t gonna be ready for that June 7th date. We looked at that date versus the February 14th date, the studio did and we did, we felt like that June date was a bigger opportunity for us globally,” continued Kinberg. “More screens, more IMAX screens, a better chance to play in China where these movies have a massive following. What we found when we released the trailer was that 44, 45 million views of the trailer were in China alone… Specific for us, it is an opportunity to be a bigger movie day-and-date globally.”
While what he says does make since on a business POV. Many fans are starting to question that maybe it got delayed again so they could reshoot the entire film. Some even suggesting that Fox will keep delaying the film until Disney officially purchases them so they can scrap the movie. In the end X-Men fans are hoping that they can at least see the final film before Disney officially acquires Fox and Kevin Feige completely reinvents these characters.
